Who Can Submit Stories?

Horsemanship Journal and Western Horse UK always look for talented new contributors like you.

Our main criteria for article ideas is that it fits with the style and ethos of the magazine; please make sure you are familiar with both titles before submitting.

We are interested in submissions from horse professionals who promote ethical training and holistic horse care. We also love receiving personal stories from our readers.

We do not accept pieces previously published online or in print. Although there are some exceptions for book excerpts, please get in touch if in doubt.

Articles will be edited for the magazine's house style if accepted. Our titles use British orthography and spelling.

A short column (for example, community news) should be 500 to 750 words. We love more in-depth pieces of 1,000 to 2500 words.

Writing Tips to Get you started ✒️

Start with a question. Your clients continually ask you questions; what are the common questions?

Once you have a question, write down what you would say to your client; at this point, don't worry about structure, spelling or grammar.

Next, break your answer into smaller chunks; these will be your subheadings.

Now you can start to fill in the gaps, adding more detail and explanation where needed.

Once you have finished writing your article, it's time to edit. This is where you'll check for grammar and spelling mistakes and ensure that your article flows smoothly.

Read your article aloud, as this can help to identify any awkward phrases or sentence constructions. You can also use the read-aloud function in word, it definitely helps to listen to words being read.

Finally, ask someone else to read your article and give you their feedback. This can be a friend, family member, colleague or even a client.

Once you're happy with your article, it's time to submit it to the magazine!

You can't beat the feeling of opening a magazine with your article beautifully laid out on the glossy pages. We hope these tips have inspired you to give magazine writing a try.
